Two-stage boundedly rational choice procedures: Theory and experimental evidence

چکیده
We study and test a class of boundedly rational models of decision making which rely on sequential eliminative heuristics. We formalize two sequential decision procedures, both inspired by plausible models popular among several psychologists and marketing scientists. However we follow a standard ‘revealed preference’ economic approach by fully characterizing these procedures by few, simple and testable conditions on observed choice. Then we test the models (as well as the standard utility maximization model) with experimental data. We find that the large majority of individuals behave in a way consistent with one of our procedures, and inconsistent with the utility maximization model. ∗Department of Economics, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS (tel: 020-7882 5083; e-mail: [email protected], http://www.qmul.ac.uk/ ̃ugte172). †Department of Economics, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS (tel: 020-7882 5094; e-mail: [email protected], http://www.qmul.ac.uk/ ̃tew040). ‡Corresponding address: Department of Economics, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS, United Kingdom. Consumer choice and revealed bounded rationality
We study two boundedly rational procedures in consumer behavior. We show that these procedures can be detected by conditions on observable demand data of the same type as standard revealed preference axioms. This provides the basis for a non-parametric analysis of boundedly rational consumer behavior mirroring the classical one for utility maximization.

Rationalizing Boundedly Rational Choice: Sequential Rationalizability and Rational Shortlist Methods A sequentially rationalizable choice function is a choice function which can be obtained by applying sequentially a fixed set of asymmetric binary relations (rationales). A Rational ShortlistMethod (RSM) is a choice function which is sequentially rationalizable by two rationales. These concepts ...
متن کاملAn Axiomatic Approach to Bounded Rationality in Repeated Interactions: Theory and Experiments
This paper proposes an axiomatic approach to study repeated interactions between two boundedly rational players. Several axioms are presented: individual security; (strong and weak) collective intelligence; and internal stability. We characterize the axioms’ solutions and payoffs, classify stage games by the degree of sophistication required to satisfy strong collective intelligence, and presen...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: An Overview
It seems easy to accept that rationality involves many features that cannot be summarized in terms of some straightforward formula, such as binary consistency. However, this recognition does not immediately lead to alternative characterizations that might be regarded as satisfactory, even though the inadequacies of the traditional assumptions of rational behavior standard used in economic theo...
متن کاملPareto-optimal matching allocation mechanisms for boundedly rational agents
Is the Pareto optimality of matching mechanisms robust to the introduction of boundedly rational behavior? To address this question I define a restrictive and a permissive notion of Pareto optimality and consider the large set of hierarchical exchange mechanisms which contains serial dictatorship as well as Gale’s top trading cycles. Fix a housing problem with boundedly rational agents and a hi...
